Let me tell you the thing nobody selling candles wants to say out loud: most people buy expensive candles wrong.

Three wicks change everything. A single wick can only melt so wide a pool of wax β and the scent throw comes from the surface area of melted wax, not from the wick. Which is why a 3-wick candle genuinely perfumes a drawing room, while a single-wick candle in the same room is essentially decorative.

An honest note on scented candles at dinner: don’t. A scented candle on a dining table fights the food, and the food should win. Light the scented candle in the room an hour before people sit down, then blow it out and put unscented tapers on the table. That’s how it’s actually done, and almost nobody knows it.

Wax has a memory, and a badly-treated luxury candle is a small tragedy.
The first burn is the one that counts. Light it and leave it burning 2β3 hours (or 3β4 hours for a 3-wick) β long enough that the entire surface melts into a full, edge-to-edge pool of liquid wax. If the first burn only melts a small circle in the middle, the candle will keep to that circle forever β burrowing down a narrow tunnel while a thick ring of unburnt wax stays welded to the glass. On a $154 candle, you would be discarding half of it.
Then, every time:
- Trim the wick to ΒΌ inch before each lighting β untrimmed wicks smoke and soot the glass
- Always light all the wicks on a multi-wick candle
- Don’t burn for more than 3 hours at a stretch β Trudon specifically advises this; prolonged burning degrades the perfume
