The quick verdict: genuine diamonds in genuine solid gold, small enough to sleep in, with more reviews behind them than anything else I have looked at in this category. Two things to get right before ordering: understand how small they are, and choose lab grown. Both matter, and I will explain each.
They are tiny, and that is the entire point
Let me be very clear, because this is where most disappointment with this listing comes from. The smallest size is 0.04 carats total weight β each stone 0.02 carats, 1.7 millimetres across. That is roughly the width of a grain of rice laid on its side.
They are not meant to be looked at from across a room. They are meant for the upper lobe, the tragus, the helix, a third piercing, a childβs first pair, or the spot above a larger stud where a little light finishes the ear without competing with anything. Bought for that, they are exactly right. Bought expecting a proper solitaire, they will disappoint, and the listing does say so β though rather fewer people read it than ought to.
Choose lab grown. Here is why.
The listing offers the same setting with either a mined or a lab grown stone, at the same price. That would seem to make it a matter of preference. It is not, once you read the grades.
The natural diamonds are graded J-K-L colour and I2-I3 clarity. That is faint yellow, and visibly included β the bottom end of what is sold as commercial quality at all.
The lab grown are G-H colour and SI clarity. Near colourless, and eye-clean.
Same money. Considerably better stone. At 1.7 millimetres, admittedly, neither grade shows very much to the naked eye β but there is simply no reason to pay the same price for the lesser diamond, and every reason to choose the one that will look cleaner as the sizes go up. If you have a particular wish for a mined stone, that is yours to have. Otherwise, take the lab grown.
Made for sleeping in
Screw backs on a stud this small are the right call. A friction butterfly at 1.7 millimetres is a tiny thing to lose in a pillowcase, and the upper-ear piercings these are designed for are exactly the ones you would rather not take out every night. A threaded post goes in and stays in.
Solid gold matters here too, and for a practical rather than a principled reason: fresh and cartilage piercings are the ones most likely to react to base metals. Solid 14K is inert enough for almost everyone, which plated silver simply is not.
The honest part π₯
At 4.0 stars, this is the lowest-rated piece in my fine earrings edit, and I think I know why. The listing is plain about the size β very small, cartilage, second piercings β but people see βdiamond studsβ in the title and expect something they can see from across a table. If you arrive knowing what you are buying, that complaint simply does not apply to you.
The second thing worth knowing is what the money buys at the top of the range. About three hundred dollars gets you 0.12 carats of real diamond here β each stone 2.4 millimetres. That same three hundred and some buys a full carat of lab grown diamond elsewhere in this edit. It is not a like-for-like comparison, since those are main-pair studs and these are not, but it is worth saying out loud: tiny mined diamonds are expensive for what they are.
And the reassuring part. 1,369 ratings is the deepest evidence behind any solid gold piece I looked at. For once the reviews are not confirmation of anything β they are the argument, and a strong one.
Who itβs for
The woman adding a second or third piercing. A cartilage stud that needs to be real gold. A first pair for a daughter. Someone who sleeps in her earrings and would like to stop losing them. And anyone who has understood that the most elegant ear is rarely the most heavily decorated one.
The bottom line
