Why velvet, and not cotton

This is the part I actually care about. Flat cotton absorbs light. Velvet has a pile, which means the fibres stand up and every one of them catches light at a slightly different angle. That is why the same colour looks flat in cotton and looks rich in velvet — it is not the dye, it is the surface.

Which matters enormously at a candlelit table. Every flame you put on top of this thing gets picked up and thrown back. It is also why velvet photographs like it cost real money, and cotton photographs like a tablecloth. If you are the person who takes one picture of the table before everyone sits down, this is the surface you want under everything.

The size is the reason I picked this one

• ⚠️ Measure before you order. Twenty-nine by a hundred and twenty is generous. On a four-seat table it will be too much. Check the other sizes.

This is for you if you want maximum impact for minimum money, and if you would rather change one thing dramatically than change five things slightly. It is also the right first buy if you are building a glam table from nothing — a velvet runner and some candles already looks like you meant it, before you have bought a single other piece.
