The quick verdict: Let me be straight with you, because you deserve that: this is a look, not a fabric upgrade. These are microfiber — polyester, not cotton — and I’m not going to dress that up. But that ruffled, gingham, soft-taupe cottage bed is genuinely lovely, it costs a fraction of what a cotton set costs, and it never wrinkles. Buy it for the look, with your eyes open. This is the whole trade-off, and I’m not going to bury it. Microfiber is polyester — plastic fibres, essentially, and plastic doesn’t let air and moisture pass through the way natural cotton does. So body heat and perspiration get trapped against you rather than wicking away.

In practice, if you sleep warm, you will notice this. Some people find microfiber gets clammy in the night — that slightly sticky, damp warmth that wakes you at 3 am. It’s the single most common complaint about microfiber sheets, and it’s a real, physical property of the material, not a manufacturing flaw.

If you sleep cool, you may never notice at all, and you’ll just enjoy a soft, pretty, wrinkle-free bed. Plenty of people love microfiber and sleep beautifully on it.

So genuinely ask yourself which sleeper you are. It’s the difference between loving these and quietly resenting them.

Cotton is a better fabric. Full stop. If breathability, longevity, and how the sheets feel to sleep in are your priorities, buy cotton — my Eddie Bauer flannel sets are 100% cotton, they breathe properly, and they’ll outlast these. They cost more, and they’re worth more.

Microfiber pills, too, and it doesn’t wash out. Polyester pills form little hard bobbles that are more stubborn than cotton’s. Wash cold, tumble low, no fabric softener — same rules — and they’ll last longer.

Static cling is a thing. Polyester holds a charge, especially in dry winter air. You’ll get the odd crackle. Skipping fabric softener makes this slightly worse, annoyingly, so pick your battle: softener helps static and worsens pilling.

And ruffles need a little care. They can catch, they can flatten in the wash, and they may want a shake-out and a fluff when you make the bed. Not difficult — just not zero-effort.

Who it’s for

The person building a cottage bedroom, a guest room, a girl’s room, or a farmhouse look on a real budget — and who cares more about how the bed looks than about the technical properties of the fibre.
